Wikis

Wikipedia is a resource I use regularly at home; I find it helpful for looking up general information and trivia, but would use at least one other reliable source to confirm facts. It was interesting to discover and explore some of the other wikis that are available.
I started out by looking at the St. Joseph County Public Library and found there a good range of information regarding services and collections.
Also, I found some interesting snatches of information e.g. the difference between biography/memoir/journals or diaries. And there is plenty of additional material connected to this subjects on offer, such as : from the new shelf; award winners and staff recommendations.
I found The Book Lovers wiki @ Princeton Public Library a straightforward, no frills wiki with reviews from librarians and readers and links to Princeton Public Library.
It was also interesting to have a look around Wookieepedia as Star Wars is something I know very little about. I was impressed by the volume of information-including graphics- that is available there to fans and for those with no or little familiarity with the subject. I imagine that due to the fans depth of knowledge, passion and interest there would be regular editing occurring.
Some ways that I think Wikis would be useful at the library are: for exhibitions and comments/feedback from visitors to the exhibitions; information about library items e.g. best sellers; reviews; staff recommendations and book award winners.

Fall Frame

Originally uploaded by CountryDreaming(Flickr)

Working my way through the use of Flickr, I've been reminding myself that it is a learning 'opportunity'!
After typing in some State Library values such as vision and valuing people many beautiful scenes and ideas unfolded before me.
I chose this photo because it has an old world feel to it, it's abundant and presents a framework for vision, growth and possibilty - and after finding a couple of other suitable photos on flickr that I couldn't blog, this one just appeared - my initial frustrations quickly diminished once I'd experienced some of the magnificent images that can be discovered on Flickr.

Some encouragement from a fellow traveller

After some procrastination, I'm back to my blog. I've been exploring and becoming more familiar with the world of blog by reading through the lessons and looking at other people's blogs - but wasn't making progress with the activities.
However, after a chat/tutorial with a colleague who has completed Learning 2.0 - and some tips about organising and simplifying my approach, I feel more confident about working my way through it.
I've had my first adventure into the world of flickr - it was great to see the State Library in many glorious aspects and from different people's point of view. And I enjoyed the beauty and humour of Frank Hurley's 'Adelie penguins after blizzard'. It was also illuminating reading other people's comments about the photos and then taking another look at the photo to explore it more fully e.g. re: Huskies pulling sledge - 'All of them have such characters in there faces'.
I also picked up some knowledge about the functions of flickr e.g. viewing photos as a slideshow.

Starting somewhere

It has been intriguing exploring what is for me , the new territory of blogging - and the knowledge and skills associated with it. And inspiring to look at the blogs that are well established, such as the Sydney Observatory blog.
The most challenging thing is finding a flow with my 2.0 learning - the terminology is still largely foreign to me and I'm forgetting things unless I revise them the following day.
